Katharine Lee Bates ''America'' Signed
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Rare Katharine Lee Bates signed copy of ''America the Beautiful,'' which the songwriter published in 1913, after multiple revisions. Touring the country in 1893, Bates was so inspired by the natural beauty and promise of the young United States, that she recorded her feelings in poetic form, but didn't publish it until two years later when it appeared in the 4 July 1895 issue of ''The Congregationalist'' entitled ''America.'' She rewrote the poem slightly in 1904 and also in 1913, with the final version recognizable by the first line of the third stanza, ''O beautiful for heroes prov'd in liberating strife.'' This copy written by Bates, especially scarce as it includes all four stanzas, is titled at top ''America the Beautiful'' and signed at the conclusion, ''Katharine Lee Bates''. Poem is printed on the first page of a four page pamphlet which provides the history, written by Bates herself, of the poem and its publication. Measures 5.25'' x 6.5''. Signature page has faint, uneven toning touching signature, two holes punched in left margin, and a minor horizontal fold, else near fine, with an excellent, clear and full signature at lower right.
