Highly important German philosopher, political theorist, and author (1818–1883) whose Communist Manifesto (1848) and Das Kapital (published 1867–1894) provided an ideological basis for communism and thus proved to be two of the most influential texts in the history of modern civilization. Rare and desirable ALS, one page, 4.5 x 7, February 19, 1881. Brief letter to an unidentified gentleman. In full: “If it be convenient to you, please to call upon me Monday next eight o’cl evening.” Intersecting folds, one through a single letter of the signature, and a small caption affixed to the extreme bottom edge, otherwise fine condition.
His political, philosophical, and ideological roles have made Marx one of the leading historical figures of all time, so it is no surprise that any correspondence from him—when it can even be found at public auction—demands a princely sum. Although the gentleman who received this invitation would have met with a man in physical and emotional decline—a man incapable of the same sustained effort that had embodied his previous works—such an encounter certainly would have been memorable. During this period, Marx provided frequent comments on German and Russian politics but he was slowed by physical ailments compounded by the deaths of his eldest daughter and his wife prior to his own 1883 demise. A virtually unobtainable example of correspondence from a man whose works literally revolutionized portions of the world.
