One of the most influential Czech writers of the 20th century. He introduced and made popular the word “robot,” which first appeared in his 1921 play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots). He later named his brother Josef as the true inventor of the word. Handwritten signed manuscript, in Czech, four pages, 6.75 x 8, entitled “How Everything Happened,” signed at the beginning by Capek. First draft of a radio feature published in the periodical “Lumir” on June 16, 1932. Capek had been requested to speak about his introduction to literature. He describes his childhood in a Sudeten village, his father, a politically-minded country physician, whose speeches he and his brother Josef took as models for their first writing experiments, his literary mother and his grandmother, who preserved a wealth of folk songs and tales. Capek has added with numerous corrections and additions in the text. In very good condition, with large “Radiojournal” stamp to top of first page, scattered pencil notations, some mild toning and soiling, and bisecting horizontal fold to each page. RRAuction COA.
