Karel Appel's works are fascinating because of their bright colors and simplistic forms; lithographs in colors fetch up to 2,400 euro at international auctions

The lithograph in colors from 1975 shows a seemingly abstract composition in bright colors and simple drawing. On closer inspection one can see a figure, a preferred motif of the artist. The almost naïve looking style of painting is typical of the artist and shows the imprint of the CoBrA group.

The lithograph in colors is signed and dated lower right in pencil ‘Appel 75’ and lower left numbered in pencil ‘41/100’. The sheet bears several glue remains and is overall somewhat toned, along the edges of the mat window slightly stronger, and additionally mat-stained. It is reversibly mounted in a mat at the reverse upper edge. The frame indicates slight signs of wear. The image measures 33.2 x 26.2 cm, the sheet 49 x 37.8 cm. The framed dimensions are 62.5 x 52 cm

Karel Appel (1921-2006)

The Dutch artist Christiaan Karel Appel studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam and founded with other artists the CoBrA group in 1948. In 1950 he moved to Paris. In 1953 he had his international breakthrough when he exhibited at the Biennale in Sao Paulo and his works were awarded there several times. Appel's work can be found in many international collections. (fea)
