Kansas Suffrage Ribbon With Pinback Button
Kansas Suffrage Ribbon With Pinback Button, 2" x 5.5" overall, black ink on gold cloth, circa 1912. A "Votes For Women" pinback is affixed to this swallow-tailed ribbon upon which is imprinted "KANSAS" above the following verse: "When Freedom's banner is unfurled, No star among its folds of blue Shines forth to nations far and wide With luster brighter, with beams more true, Though oft mid clouds 'tis hidden quite, It rises ever for the right." Excellent condition. This suffrage ribbon from Kansas is more than simply another suffrage ribbon. Campaigning for a suffrage referendum in Kansas in 1867, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and the pro-suffrage forces adopted the state symbol, the sunflower, and its color of gold or yellow was on its way to becoming an official color of the movement. In 1867, Kansas suffragists chose a yellow ribbon as their "distinctive sign," a sign that was picked up elsewhere as well. This ribbon was probably produced for the campaign in 1912 when a suffrage referendum finally passed in that state.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
