Kalispell,MT - Flathead County - c1885 - Agency of Kalispell Steam Laundry Photograph :
Cabinet card of 6-8 Native Americans, primarily children with one adult, around a wagon outside of several wooden structures, one of which has a prominent sign that reads "Kalispell Agency of Steam Laundry." Image measures 5" x 3", mounted on a brown cardstock matte with a fancy etched border measuring 7" x 5". Contrast is medium, with some fading noted in the horizon. The focus is good to sharp, with the image very fine overall. The matte shows some wear on lower left corner, while an area at top left appears to have had tape applied and removed. Np photographer listed. In 1855, Native Americans were forced to surrender their land and move onto reservations, while in 1880 a boat landing and store were built along the Flathead River near Kalispell. By 1885 freight and passengers move on the Flathead Lake, with the U.S. Grant one of the first steamboats to travel the lake. In 1891 the Great Northern Railway arrived in the valley, by way of Kalispell. The City of Kalispell is incorporated in 1892, while the first railroad car pulls into Main Street in downtown Kalispell. By 1904 the Great Northern Railroad moved the main line from Kalispell to Whitefish, thereby eliminating many curves in the trip. Kalispell residents are not happy about this [Ref: allglacier.com/kalispell_montana].
