Part 2 of a two volume set. The Hako: A Pawnee Ceremony, Fletcher, Alice C. (Holder of the Thaw Fellowship, Peabody Museum, Harvard University.) With the aid of the educated Pawnee, Mr. James R. Murie, Fletcher recounts specific traits and customs of the Pawnee people, noting in her preface that "[Murie] has not spared himself in his labor... to preserve his ancient lore." The Hako was carried to area tribes from the Pawnee. The research took Fletcher a full four years to prepare for publication. She notes that gramophone records were taken of all of the Hako ceremony songs belonging to the Pawnee. The music was then transcribed from the cylinders and is here printed. "The songs are commended to the general student of music and particularly to the young composers of our country as offering native themes worthy of musical treatment," from the preface. "Hako" is a comprehensive term which is used to indicate all articles which belong to the ceremony discussed herein. Fletcher, born in Cuba, was 62 years old when this report was published. Her early association with the Peabody led to her future status among ethnographers and researchers. Like many of her contemporaries, Fletcher pursued "living Indians" rather than ancient North American civilizations. She was relieved of official government work when she received a fellowship at the Peabody allowing for her intellectual pursuits and the subsequent publication of this report. She continued to rely on her relationships with members of native tribes to bring American Indian customs to mainstream America. By the time of her death, Fletcher held many posts including Vice-President for the Advancement of Science, founding member of the American Anthropological Association, and President of the American Folklore Association.
