KOROLENKO, VLADIMIR G.
(1853–1921) Russian short-story writer and publicist. A member of a Populist circle, he was arrested in 1879 and exiled to Siberia until 1885. There he wrote many of his lyrical tales, notable for their descriptions of desolate nature. His most famous story, “Makar's Dream” describes a dying peasant's dream of heaven. Rare A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., [n.p.], May 17, 1908 concerning news the author had received of the trial of a revolutionary by the name of Grechkin. He quotes another revolutionary wife's statement: "…he was armed from head to foot and accompanied by a crowd of armed people…[with] a demand for me to write to my husband and tell him to surrender to the rebels…[Grechkin] threatened me with death…[he] said that perhaps they would not kill me after all, in light of my pregnancy…" The lady further relates that Grechkin returned a few days later, threatening to incinerate her husband's barracks with all of those inside…a means to pressure me to write the letter…" Korolenko comments that he was impressed with the lady's letter, adding: "…fortunately for her…Grechkin's life does not depend on her testimony…" Very good.
