KONSTANTIN EGOROVICH MAKOVSKY (1839-1915) Moscow, Russia: Oil on canvas. Portrait of a mature woman (possibly his wife, Maria Alexeevna). Makovsky was one of the most appreciated and highly paid Russian artists. In 1858, he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg. By the 1880's he had become famed for his portraits and historical paintings. ''Alexander II, 1881'' is amoung his portraits. Konstantin was killed in his horse-driven carriage in 1915 when it was hit by an electric tram. Framed portrait is signed ''C. Makovsky'' in the middle left side. Condition noted: two small nicks to canvas approximately .25'' on the lower edge on the lace collar and on the right side near arm. 33.5''H x 30''W

This painting has been owned by one family since it's creation in 1908. It was gifted by Armin Otto Leuschner, noted professor of Astronomy at the University of California ar Berkley. There was some possible restoration work done to the frame in 1956. The restoration was done by Gump's Gallery in Francisco. At the time, the painting was valued at $750 and the restoration cost $60. This information was provided by the family.
