KNOX, HENRY
(1750 - 1806) American Revolution major general and advisor to Washington, Knox served throughout the war and was responsible for building the Continental Army's artillery stock. A.D.S. penned on the front panel (only) of an envelope addressed in another hand to "Col Marinus Willett", 5" x 3 3/4", [n.p., n.d., postmarked in New York]. At the lower-left corner Knox boldly writes: "The post master at Richmond will be so good as to retain this letter until the arrival of Colo. Willet with the Creek Chiefs. H. Knox". Margins ragged, silked, yet Knox's note remains bold and completely acceptable. President George Washington summoned the Creek Indians to a treaty conference in New York in August of 1790. Marinus Willett served as Washington's special envoy, and promised the Indians a treaty: "as strong as the hills and lasting as the rivers" to protect Indian lands from white encroachment. Matted with an engraving.
