KITCHENER, HORATIO H.
(1850-1916) British general who invaded Sudan, annihilated al-Mahdi' s army at Omdurman, and reoccupied Khartoum. He later fought the Boers in South Africa. Good content A.L.S. signed with his initial "K", 4pp. 4to., "Commander-in-Chief's Camp, India", Oct. 29, 1908, to Jimmy, in part: "...I find it was Prince Mohammed Ali who asked for the radios from the 18th...and not H.H. the Khedive. I understand the Colonel of the regiment is sending all particulars...I am...interested in the state of affairs at Constantinople. I cannot help thinking that unless the young Turk party take up seriously the thorough reorganization of the Army so as to be able to effectively defend the country against aggression. The Oswaula [?] is a very proud race and will not care to stand insult...The soldiers are splendid material, some of the best in the world...It is rather tempting to think of reorganizing the Turkish Army but I know the difficulties would be enormous...My time here is practically up but of course until the present crisis is over I could hardly go to Istanbul...". Boldly written and very good.
