caroline meets dr. king at the white house
Original appointment sheet prepared by Evelyn Lincoln, secretary for President John F. Kennedy. Measuring 8"x10", it is entitled “The President’s Appointments Saturday, June 22, 1963.” Annotated at top margin by Lincoln in type, “Caroline amusing Rev. King with her writing and to her delight Rev. King showing her he can write too! A wonderful brief exchange 6-22-63.” The appointment lists the President’s morning appointments which includes in addition to King’s 10:00 appointment, that of Roy Wilkins (1901-1981), executive director of the NAACP, at 9:00 and at 10:30- “The President will meet with a group of leaders in the field of Civil Rights.” Beneath the appointments, King has inscribed and signed, “To my Little Miss Kennedy—Martin Luther King Jr.” in blue fountain pen. In lower margin, young Caroline has filled the blank space with a series of letters printed in bold pencil. A single horizontal center fold of no affect. Attractively matted beside two b/w photographs, one of JFK with King and the other of Caroline standing in White House office office. Contained under glass within museum frame. Overall approx 18"x20". Accompanied by a handwritten letter by Caroline Kennedy on both sides of her personal notecard at her Park Avenue address in New York, n.d. Responding to noted autograph auctioneer and dealer Jim Smith who had offered this memento to her, she writes, “Enclosed please find the Martin Luther King letter you were kind enough to send earlier this year on approval. Unfortunately I will not be able to purchase it. I am sorry it has taken so long to return it to you. It has been difficult to keep track of a number of things lately. I hope you understand...” Boldly penned and signed. A very nice historic collection relating to the Kennedy Presidency and the Civil Rights movement.
