KENNEDY, JOHN F.
141. JOHN F. KENNEDY Good content A.L.S. on Hyannisport letterhead, 4pp. 8vo., Sep. 3 [n.y., but most likely 1940] to a Mr. Goldsmith, one of Kennedy's neighbors at Hyannisport. In full: "Dear Mr. Goldsmith: Thanks very much for your letter and your friendly comment on the book - also the radio transcription which I imagine you had a good deal to do with. I sent you over a copy about a week ago which means you will now have two to content with. I'm sorry it didn't get there sooner. You were quite right on your comment on the words at the conclusion. I felt at the time, that the most effective way was to merely point out the various factors - and let people then make up their minds. Thank you again for writing - I appreciate it an awful lot. I hope I see you when I get up. Warmest regards, Jack". One fold, staple hole at blank upper-left, else very good. Kennedy no doubt is making reference to his book Why England Slept, written by Kennedy in 1940 when he was still in college and reprinted in 1961 when he was president, this book is an appraisal of the tragic events of the thirties that led to World War II, an account of England's lack of preparedness for war and a study of the shortcomings of democracy when confronted by totalitarianism.$2,000-3,000
