KENNEDY, JOHN F.
140. JOHN F. KENNEDY Great political content A.L.S. "Jack" as Senator, 4pp. 8vo. on pale yellow stationery, [n.p.], Oct., 1954 to his assistant Langdon P. Marvin, Jr. Kennedy angrily reacts to a Drew Pearson newspaper column that he is avoiding Senate hearings to censure red-baiting Sen. Joseph McCarthy by choosing the same time to receive hospital treatment for a war injury. Wondering how Pearson obtained his information, Kennedy writes in part: "...Foster Furculo had already sent me the Pearson column. It demonstrates my previous point. My guess is that it came either from Furculo himself who is close to Pearson - or perhaps from Ed Michaelson...In any case, the facts are wrong. As you know, the operation was set in advance of the McCarthy Censure business and 2ndly it is doubtful if Furculo could beat Saltonstall in 1954 if I would have to worry about him in `58..." Kennedy closes his letter with a jab at Pearson's son-in-law, political columnist Jack Anderson, noting: "...I will leave it to your judgment - but it demonstrates that Anderson etc. is unfriendly & I am inclined to say to hell with them...". Kennedy frequently took stands against McCarthy, despite the fact that Massachusetts had the highest proportion of McCarthy supporters in the country. Fellow Democrat Foster Furculo was at the time seeking a senator's seat, and with Kennedy planning to run for the Senate four years hence, Pearson speculated that the future president might have feared his chances for election would be hurt with another Democrat already in office. Accompanied by a clipping of Pearson's "Washington Merry-Go-Round" column, reading in part: "...[Kennedy] will choose the particular moment of the McCarthy debate to be hospitalized because of his huge McCarthy following in Massachusetts...Young Kennedy might have a second political purpose...skipping any campaigning for Foster Furculo...". File holes in blank top margin, else very good.$4,000-6,000
