A two-sheet ALS from the actor John P. Kemble, a member of the 19th century theatrical family along with his sister, Sarah Siddons. The letter is to Alexander Murray, Esq., Symonds Inn, Chancery Lane, London, dated January 27, 1823. One sheet bears the letter on both sides, the second sheet served as an envelope with the address, two postmark stamps, and red wax seal remnants. Kemble writes from Lausanne, Switzerland, where he is convalescing for his health. After writing that he has heard news of Murray's marriage through "Miss Siddons," Kemble congratulates him and offers felicitations. He then talks of his ill health and travels in Italy, and concludes by inquiring about the payment of his annuity, and a matter of Mr. Harris's bond, which "lies heavy" on his heart. 8 7/8in. x 7 5/16in. (letter); 7 1/4in. x 8 3/4in. (envelope sheet). Condition: The letter has approx. five vertical and three horizontal folds; edge folds and small edge tears; light toning, soiling. The envelope sheet has two vertical and three horizontal folds; there is an approx. 1 1/2in. x 1in. torn out fragment at the location of the sealing wax; edge folds; toning, foxing/soiling.
