Käthe Kollwitz is one of the most famous German artists of the 20th century, whose expressive graphics are preserved in museums and private collections; her lithography ‘Mutter mit Jungen’ fetch up to 7,700 euro at international auctions
This touching chalk lithograph from 1933 shows in a definite, brisk stroke a mother holding her little son in her arms. The boy has wrapped his arms around her neck and pressed against her, his gaze is directed slightly inclined into the room. The mother smiles lovingly at the little one. While in early works by the artist the misery of the urban proletariat dominated thematically, she focuses herself in her later works especially to representations of mothers with their children.
The lithograph is signed in pencil lower right ‘Käthe Kollwitz’. The lower margin is presumably trimmed. There is a small water stain at the lower sheet edge. The paper is overall slightly toned. Three small remains of adhesive tape show faintly through on recto. The condition overall is good. The image measures 36 x 21.8 cm, the sheet 44.4 x 37.8 cm.
Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945)
The German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Käthe Kollwitz was born in Königsberg in Prussia. Her works are mostly inspired by personal experiences and circumstances and are marked by a special and partly frightening seriousness and realism. Kollwitz was one of the well-known members of the artist’s organization of the ‘Berliner Secession’. Her works are not only part of well-known collections such as of the MoMa in New York but of entire museums dedicated to the artist in Berlin, Cologne and Moritzburg.
