The present portrait is the work of the Munich painter of Hungarian origin Kálmán Deri (1859-1940). It is a typical costume portrait, which became particularly popular in the entire Europe around 1900. Deri‘s fine painting shows an middle aged gentleman with tricorn hat and stick in an interior. The tricorn determined the 18th century officers and nobles costumes. From about 1720 until the 19th century, the tricorn was also used in civil clothing.
The painting is signed 'K. Deri’ to the left margin. It is in very good condition, showing some small framing marks. The gilded stucco frame is in very good condition, showing minor wear marks. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 37 x 31 cm. The stretcher measures 18 x 11.8 cm.
Kálmán Deri (1859-1940)
Kálmán Deri was born in 1859 in Bács in Hungary. He studied at the Vienna Academy with the Austrian historical and portrait painter August Eisenmenger (professor from 1872), who also founded a private school for the training of young talents in the monumental painting. After his studies, Deri worked as a genre and still life painter in Munich.
