<td width="100%">
Rookwood slip decorated art pottery vase in Standard glaze, artist signed Kataro Shirayamadani, possibly the most sought after of the Rookwood artists (worked at Rookwood 1887 -1911 and then 1921 - 1948). shape #517. Date 1891.
Measures 6 1/2inches high.

Small round base. Body with large round bottom and a wide neck, tapering slightly towards the top and then flaring out at the rim. The ground in shades of mahogany, gold, brown and warm orange. Inside the vase is golden yellow with areas of dark green. Masterfully slip decorated with berries and foliage on twigs in colours ranging from light yellow, through greens to warm oranges and browns. Parts of the decoration almost carved in relief above the surface of the body.

Marked underneath with impressed Rookwood mark with 5 flames - 1891; shape 517; C which probably refers to both a middle size and possibly a new shape; There is an impressed S (for Shirayamadani?) visible inside the written artist's signature.

Condition is very good. There is the usual light crazing typical of Rookwood of this age, but no chips/cracks/restorations.
Please ask for extra 'photos.
