K.E.M. Weber KEM Weber Group sideboard
K.E.M. Weber KEM Weber Group sideboard Grand Rapids Furniture Company USA, c. 1928 walnut, lacquered wood, glass, silver leaf 36"w x 16"d x 54"h The Kem Weber sideboard from 1928 is a striking example of Art Moderne design. Weber simplified traditional furniture forms and added bold detailing that emphasizes the horizontal. He achieved a subtle interplay of color and form by combining his signature "Sage Green" lacquer with delicate touches of silver leaf. The rich walnut frieze with zigzag decoration balances the overall effect of the color treatment and adds spare ornament to the otherwise severe form. The horizontal emphasis and the rounded corners of the lower table anticipate the streamline style that came to define the 1930s. A matching serving table from this series is in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago. Literature: Furniture Record, Sept. 1928, pg. 62 Museum Studies, The Art Institute of Chicago, pg. 45
