TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Boston Celtics Basketball Club letterhead, September 20, 1967. Brief letter to Celtics General Manager Red Auerbach, in full: "This is to inform you of my voluntary retirement from the Boston Celtics Basketball Club, effective September 20, 1967." In fine condition. Accompanied by Western Union telegram from Auerbach to NBA Commissioner J. Walter Kennedy, dated October 13, 1967, requesting that he place Jones on the "Voluntary Retired List."

At the age of 34, K. C. Jones retired from the NBA after nine seasons spent playing entirely with the Boston Celtics. During that time frame, he helped the Celtics win eight consecutive NBA titles; the lone year Jones didn’t win the championship was his last in 1967, when the Philadelphia 76ers ended their streak in the Eastern Division Finals. Jones would win four more titles as a coach, three of which came again with the Celtics—twice more as an assistant coach in 1972 and 1981, and twice as the Celtics head coach in 1986 and 1986.
