German chemist (1803–1873) regarded as one of the greatest chemistry teachers of all time, and also known as the ‘father of the fertilizer industry’ for his discovery of nitrogen as an essential plant nutrient. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite photo by Franz Hanfstaengl of Munich, signed on the reverse in black ink, “Justus v Liebig, Munchen 1872.” Brushing to location and date under signature, and ink and pencil notations to lower border, otherwise fine condition.
