527-565 A.D. Justinian I Gold Solidus--Double Struck--ICG. 20 mm. Constantinople, 538-545 A.D. Diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing, holding globus cruciger and shield decorated with a horseman spearing fallen enemy / Angel standing facing, holding cross and globus cruciger; star in right field; B/CONOB. This is one of the most spectacular ancient errors we have encountered. Double struck, the second strike is several degrees southeast of the initial blow from the dies. The double strike produces two clear CONOB legends, but scrambles the right side legends. DOC 8a; SB 139. AU58 ICG.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
