Justh and Hunter Gold Ingot. 112.38 ounces. Like many C
Justh and Hunter Gold Ingot. 112.38 ounces. Like many California assayers, the firm of Justh and Hunter opened and closed several times over the course of a decade or so. Several partners were taken on and dropped as well. After arriving in San Francisco, Justh had a previous partner in a customs house and brokerage business. The assaying partnership of Emil Justh and Solomon Hunter was formed in 1855, after Justh had spent a short but undetermined amount of time in the employ of the newly opened San Francisco Mint. An interesting sidenote is when S.H. Hunter traveled to San Francisco from New York, the first leg of the journey was on the S.S. John Law, later renamed the S.S. Central America, which is the treasure ship from which this ingot was salvaged.
After Emil Justh sold his assaying business to Kellogg, Hewston & Co. in 1861, he returned to New York to take up business as a broker and banker. In 1871, he was involved in a complicated divorce case. In October of that year, two policemen came to his residence and Justh pulled a revolver and pointed it at the head of one of the officers. Before he could discharge the weapon, the other officer wrenched it from his hand. Justh was eventually released from custody. However, his health began to fail and a move to Paris did not improve matters. He died in 1883 at the age of 58.
Justh and Hunter never issued any coins and were virtually unknown until the salvage of the S.S. Central America. The ship had 84 ingots from this firm, 60 from the San Francisco branch and 26 from the Marysville operation. This ingot is a moderately heavy one from Justh, the lightest salvaged 5.24 ounces and the heaviest 866.19 ounces. The top side of the bar has NO. 4281. / Justh & Hunter imprint / 112.38 OZS. 912 FINE / $2118.66. Two small assay chips are out of opposing corners. Slight rust is seen on the right side of the top side, while extensive traces of iron rust are located on the back of the ingot.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
