Julius Caesar, d. 44 B.C.
Julius Caesar, d. 44 B.C.<p> Fourrée denarius. Diademed head right of Apollo/Aeneas walking left, carrying palladium in right hand and Anchises on left shoulder. Cf. Cr. 444/1 for obverse, Cr. 458/1 for reverse. Fine+. An ancient counterfeit fabricated by combining an obverse type of Sicinia 1 (original struck 49 B.C. at a mint moving with Pompey) and a reverse type of Caesar's (original struck 47-46 B.C. in Africa by Caesar). A fascinating hybrid fourrée! Fourrées are plated coins, made by the fusion of a base metal core with a silver overlay. Unitized by pressure, fourrées can be identified by their copper core showing through, especially on the edges and pockmarks inherent in the procedure. They are most often lighter in weight than the originals, and have a cruder and softer appearance. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
