Julius Caesar, d. 44 B.C.
Julius Caesar, d. 44 B.C.<p> AV aureus minted by A. Hirtius in 46 B.C. Veiled female head right/Lituus, jug and ax. 8.18 g. Cr. 466/1, Syd. 1017. EF45 ICG. Gold coins were struck infrequently during the Roman Republic, but by the time of Julius Caesar, this precious metal began to play a more important role. Minted in pure gold, the aureus at this time weighed 1/40th of a Roman pound. Later, during Nero's reign, the weight was reduced so that 45 gold coins were struck to the pound. Twenty-five silver denarii equaled one gold aureus. From the Collection of Dr. Joseph M. Seventko. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
