Desirable AQS on an 8.5 x 10 off-white sheet, signed “Julia Ward Howe, Jan. 2nd, 1893.” Howe writes out the first and fourth verses of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”. In full:
“Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.
He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.”
In fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning, a bit heavier along right edge, and the delicately-penned writing just a bit light.
In 1861, after a visit to a Union Army camp, Howe wrote a poem that is now known as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic," later published in the February 1862 issue of The Atlantic Monthly. The same year she penned the verses offered here—in May 1893 to precise—Howe participated in events at the Chicago Columbian Exposition, including chairing a session and presenting a report on "Moral and Social Reform" at the World’s Congress of Representative Women. A scarce and excellent presentation of one of the nation’s most recognizable and patriotic songs.
