Jules Tavernier painted notable scenes of the West, known for both his Hawaiian and California paintings. Born in Paris in 1844, his father was English and mother French Jules claimed British citizenship. He was known as Hawaii's first painter and died in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1889. Most of his California work was of northern California, which in his day was the area above Santa Barbara and further north. This painting is one of two that came from the same consignor. These came from an old prominent Portland family that has owned the painting for several decades. These are more unusual then most of Tavernier's works being vertical paintings. This one is 12" x 24" and is Oil on Canvas. It features a costal scene with three Indians on a beach by a wickiups or lean-tos. Signed lower right, there is a vertical scratch / tear 1 1/4" long running through the tent. The paining framed several years ago by the family is as received.
