DS, signed “Judy Garland,” eight pages, 8.5 x 11, November 20, 1947. Agreement between the actress and Phil Berg-Bert Allenberg, Inc. In part: “The Actor employs the Agent as his Agent in the motion picture industry and the Agent accepts such employment…The term of this contract shall be for a period of three (3) years commencing November 20, 1947…The Actor agrees to pay to the Agent a sum equal to ten (10) per cent of all moneys or other consideration received by the Actor.” A couple corner creases, staple at top left corner, two sets of filing punch holes at the top, and a small pencil notation, otherwise fine condition. This contract was drawn mere months after Garland’s first suicide attempt in July of 1947, and only eight months later, her relationship with Berg-Bert Allenberg came to a screeching halt after she proved unable to complete the filming of Barkleys of Broadway. She would make her triumphant return in the aptly-titled 1954 hit, A Star Is Born. This document represents Berg-Bert Allenberg’s last effort to retain their beloved, tumbling star.
