Judge Roy Bean - Law West of the Pecos
Original wooden sign from the famous Judge's home across the street from the courthouse "Roy Beans Opera House - Town Hall and Seat of Justice." The sign is 24 feet x 11 inches and is 1/2” thick. The condition is as shown in photo and has no mold or rot. Paint is peeling and flaking. Shows heavy weathering as the painted letters are in high relief compared to the white areas. Judge Roy Bean (1825-1904) “The Hanging Judge”. One of the more colorful characters of West Texas history, he referred to himself as "The Law West of Pecos”. His court house was also his saloon on the Rio Grande River. Judge Roy Bean had a fascination for the internationally know actress Miss Lilly Langtry, the true love of his live, and named both the town and saloon after her. Hence the name Langtry, Texas. Roy always bragged about his meeting Miss Langtry, (Roy had never met Lilly) and said she would come sing for the town at his Jersey Lilly Saloon. When his first saloon was destroyed by fire in 1896, the Judge rebuilt it and constructed his home behind the Jersey Lilly, which he called the "Opera House, Town Hall and Seat of Justice," so named in anticipation of the day when Miss Langtry would perform there. Roy used his spare time to write her many letters, and purportedly she wrote back a few times. After years of writing her Miss Langtry accepted his invitation to visit him and the town named after her. Unfortunately “Hanging Judge Roy Bean” died nine months prior to Lilly's arrival. This 24 foot wooden sign "Opera House, Town Hall and Seat of Justice", is the original sign that hung over Hanging Judge Roy Bean's home. When the state of Texas demolished & refurbished the buildings in Langtry, Texas years ago, one of the demo men had the foresight to take this sign home. Kept in storage for many years, we are proud to offer this rare and exciting piece of West Texas history.
