Judge Holt Cigar Label from H. W. & Co. A lithographed and gold-embossed 8.5" x 6.25" inner label picturing Judge Holt as "Secretary of War 1860," a position he actually held for only about two months under President James Buchanan just before President Abraham Lincoln's inauguration. Joseph Holt was born in Kentucky where he practiced law and edited a Louisville newspaper before becoming the U.S. Commissioner of Patents in 1857. Lincoln appointed him Judge Advocate General of the Union Army in 1862, and, in that position, Holt was the controversial head judge at the trial of the accused Lincoln assassination conspirators in 1865. A label with great crossover appeal for members of the legal profession, as well as for political and Lincoln collectors. Excellent to near mint condition with just some minor light handling.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
