Judge Gurcharan Singh Bhatia, C.M. (b. August 2, 1931 in Doraha, Punjab) endured the horrors of the 1947 Partition, losing his father and many relatives. He earned a BA (Mathematics Honors) at Punjab University and completed postgraduate studies in Industrial Management in Scotland, winning the Turnbull Prize
Immigrating to Canada in 1964, he settled first in Winnipeg, later Edmonton. Bhatia founded the Alberta Link/Canadian Link newspaper, served on the Canadian Human Rights Commission, and became Alberta’s first visible-minority Citizenship Judge, administering citizenship to tens of thousands.
Appointed Member of the Order of Canada in 1997 for promoting multiculturalism and human rights, he also co-founded Daughters Day and remains active in civil-society work.
