Partly-printed war-dated DS, signed “J. P. Benjamin,” one page, 8.5 x 10.75, November 19, 1861. Confederate commission appointing John J. Murphy “Brigade Commissary Major in the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States.” Signed at the conclusion by Benjamin as acting secretary of war. In very good condition, with scattered light creasing and wrinkling, tear to top edge, some light toning along horizontal folds, and light mirroring. Murphy would go on to become Chief of Staff to General Leonidas Polk. Accompanied by Murphy’s post-war presidential pardon, bearing a printed signature of Andrew Johnson. Pardon rates good to very good. A rare combination of a Confederate officer’s commission and the resulting presidential pardon.
