British-born American politician and lawyer (1811-1884) who, after serving in the US Senate and rejecting nomination to the Supreme Court, served variously as attorney general, secretary of war, and secretary of state for the Confederacy. Civil War-dated partly-printed DS, signed “J. P. Benjamin,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, December 31, 1864. Benjamin appoints James H. Holman as "Lieut. Coonel, 1st Tenn. Regt. P. A. in the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States." Signed at the conclusion by Benjamin as secretary of war. Cloth-matted and framed with a plaque and portrait to an overall size of 24.75 x 19.25. In very good condition, with creasing, staining, and paper loss along the lower horizontal fold, apparently backed with archival tape on the reverse.
