<B>Judah P. Benjamin Signature and Autograph Letter </B></I> This lot consists of a letter written in Benjamin's hand, and a clipped signature laid down on the letter. The letter measures 7.5" x 9", and the clipped signature measures, 2.3" x 1.3". The letter contains several legal statements regarding acts of congress. Benjamin was a well-known statesman for the Confederacy. He served as the first Attorney General of the Confederacy, and also as the Secretary of War. He was a slave owner, and an advocate of the South's cause during the war. He was also known for being one of the first Jewish people to hold high office in America. When confronted about his faith he quipped, "It is true that I am a Jew, and when my ancestors were receiving their Ten Commandments from the immediate Deity, amidst the thundering and lightnings of Mt. Sinai, the ancestors of my opponent were herding swine in the forests of Great Britain."<BR><BR>Both the letter and the signature are in good condition; some yellowing has occurred on the signature clip; pencil notations on the lower portion of the letter and signature; letter is backed on a second sheet of white paper.
