Headed Territory of New Mexico – County of Lincoln Certification for horse brand executed by Patron as sheriff. Dated 1878, in part for the purpose of branding horses, mules, and cattle.... Items by Patron are extremely scarce. Pen on lined paper, 9” x 7” Juan Patron (1855-1884) had served the Territory in numerous positions. As a deputy sheriff in 1878, during the Lincoln County War, Patron sided with the McSween faction and was shot in the back by John Riley of the Dolan-Murphy faction. He survived and became captain of the Lincoln County Rifles, but was gunned down in a saloon six years later. Shown and described: Owning Western History by Warren Anderson, page 32.
