One of 8000 Model 1864 Joslyn breech loading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department from the Joslyn Fire Arms Company of Stonington, Connecticut .The carbine had a blue barrel and casehardened iron mountings, with the hooded firing pin that distinguish the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 Carbine. The barrel is fitted with a pinched blade front sight and two-leaf folding rear sight. The lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO. / STONINGTON CONN / 1864" ahead of the hammer and the rear of the breechblock is marked "B.F. JOSLYN PATENT / OCTOBER 8TH 1861 / JUNE 24TH 1862". The matching serial number is located on the top of the breechblock and upper tang. The heel of the buttplate is marked "US" and the left rear of the barrel is marked with the inspectors initials "F.D.L.". Mounted with a one piece oil finished straight grip stock with saddle ring and bar on the left side, two boxed "FDL" cartouches and an iron carbine buttplate. The Joslyn was an effective and popular carbine that was widely issued to Federal Cavalry throughout the Civil War.

Condition: Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some minor dings on the barrel at the barrel band. The stock has been freshened some time ago and remains very good with a few minor chips, dings and dents. The cartouches are faint, but readable. Markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically fine.
