One of 8,000 Model 1864 Joslyn breech-loading carbines purchased by the Ordnance Department. The carbine has the casehardened iron mountings and hooded firing pin that distinguish the Model 1864 Carbine from the brass mounted Model 1862 Carbine. The barrel is fitted with a three-leaf folding rear sight. The lock plate is marked "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON CONN/1864" ahead of the hammer. The serial number is located on the top of the breechblock and upper tang. The heel of the buttplate is marked "US". Two cartouches are stamped on the left stock flat.

Very good. The carbine has a mottled gray patina with traces of silvered out original case colors in the protected areas. The stock very fine with some minor pressure dents and scratches. The cartouches are weak but legible. Mechanically fine.
