Joshua Bates. Financial wizard, senior
Joshua Bates. Financial wizard, senior partner of Baring Bros., international bankers. Two excellent A.Ls.S., London, Oct. 27, 1854 and Mar. 16, 1855, 8 pp. in all, to his friend in America, Hon. Abbott Lawrence, member of House of Representatives, U.S. Minister to England, and developer of the textile industry in Lawrence, Mass. Writing in a clear hand, Bates discusses the state of affairs in Europe. "...Things look very gloomy for this country. Within a few days it has become more apparent that all Europe will be at war before many months...," mentioning Russia, Sevastopol, and the French Army. "Abroad everything looks complicated. Since the awful loss of the Arctic, there is a feeling of insecurity in traveling the Atlantic." Anticipates battles to take place in the Crimea; mentions visits to the Queen at Windsor of the Emperor and Empress of France. Financial commentary interspersed, on the state of gold, corn prices, free trade, and money. Bates, an American by birth, supported the Union during the Civil War and founded the Boston Public Library. Lawrence established the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard. Both letters very fine.
