Empress of France, born Joséphine de Beauharnais (1763–1814). Married Napoleon in 1796 and divorced in 1810, unable to produce an heir. LS in French, signed “La Pagerie Bonaparte,” one page, 5 x 6.25, no date. A letter most likely concerning a transfer of horses. In full (translated): “Citizen Cerberr, although absent, I hope that you will want to grant citizen Barral what I would have obtained from you if I had stayed in Paris. I therefore recommend him to your kindness and please believe in my affection.” Matted and framed with a photo to an overall size of 21.75 x 17.75. In very good condition, with scattered staining and soiling (lightly touching signature) and a few wrinkles. The signature is dark and otherwise unaffected. An uncommon letter from one of history’s most intriguing women.
