Photograph taken by Henri Manuel in Paris. Josephine Baker (1906–1975) was a groundbreaking American-born French dancer, singer, and actress who became a superstar in 1920s Paris, known for her "banana dance". Escaping US segregation, she became a French Resistance spy during WWII, a civil rights activist, and the first Black woman honored in the French Pantheon.
