Joseph Wolf Elephant Folio Print: Cynailurus Jubata; Cheetah. This print comes from J. Wolf and J. Smit's A Monograph of the Felidae or the Family of Cats, (London 1878- 1883). This book was made to illustrate and describe all cat species known to man at that time. The Cheetah, pictured here, is native to central and southern India, in the North-West from Kandish, through Sind and Rajpoontana, and Africa. Two pages of text, which contain information and observations about the species, accompany this print. He states that the Cheetah is a hybrid of the Lion and the Leopard, and does not fall into the genus Felis because it has non-retractable claws. For this reason, he says, that it is more closely related to dogs than cats. A beautiful rendering; features the mother cat with her two young.
