Joseph Wolf Elephant Folio Print: Felis Bengalensis; Bengal Leopard Cat. This image is from J. Wolf and J. Smit's A Monograph of the Felidae or the Family of Cats, (London 1878-1883), which was written to document and illustrate every existing cat species known to man at that time. Wolf was a well-known illustrator of animals. In his youth, he was an apprentice at a Lithographer's shop in Leiden; the quality of his work was so exceptional that soon he was getting his own work, and lots of it. He produced images for the Zoological Society of London, and many people consider his work on the cat family to be his greatest. This print features the Bengal Leopard Cat, native to the interiors of India, Myanmar, and the islands of Sumatra and Java. This image shows the cats looking up at a small squirrel as they both jockey for position in a tree.
