Merchant (1725–1761) in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and a Deputy Governor of the colony. Manuscript DS, signed “Jos: Whipple,” one page both sides, 8 x 12.5, October 14, 1756. In part: “Joseph Whipple of Newport in the Colony of Those Island and Providence Plantations in New England Esq. maketh oath…he was appointed Naval Officer and had the Naval Office there…And this deponent saith that he is and hath been for many years past intimately well acquainted with John Boutin of Rhode Island…he knows the said John Boutin commanded several other vessels in the English Service for Thode Island…he always lookd upon the said John Boutin as a naturalized subject of the King of Great Britain otherwise he should not have employed him.” Intersecting folds with partial separations, a few edge tears, and scattered foxing, otherwise very good condition.
