Confederate major general (1836–1906), known as ‘Fightin’ Joe,’ who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. Civil War–dated LS signed “Jos. Wheeler,” one page, 7.25 x 9.75, March 10, 1863. Letter to General Braxton Bragg. In part: “Your letter regarding the bad conduct of the Cavalry in the immediate front of the Army was received this evening. I am constrained to think that these stampedes result from neglect on the part of officers in immediate command, and carelessness in posting and instructing the pickets…I sent officers to inspect the entire front and see that the pickets & Videttes were properly posted. I hope by giving the matter good attention to prevent a recurrence of such mortifying affairs…I directed General Wharton to relieve the Regiments from Gen’l Morgan’s Brigade, near Bradyville and Woodbury. Upon the arrival of the Regiments from Gen’l Wharton’s Brigade, the enemy advanced and they all remained in position to resist him. On the enemy’s retiring the Regiments of Gen’l Morgan’s Brigade went on towards Liberty…I am now requiring the strictest accountability to be given of all arms and ammunition issued, and nothing can now be lost without its being charged to the responsible person. Any deficiency we have in guns we can supply by sabres, with which, with proper spirit, we can capture any arms we may require.” Affixed to a same-size cardstock sheet. In very good condition, with moderate scattered soiling and trimmed edges.
