Confederate major general (1836–1906), known as ‘Fightin’ Joe,’ who served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee, fighting most of its battles in the Western Theater; he was shot and wounded three times during the war. TLS signed “Jos. Wheeler,” one page, 7.25 x 9.5, US House of Representatives letterhead, April 27, 1898. Letter to former Confederate soldier G. G. Lilly, thanking him for his services in the Spanish-American War. In full: “Your letter touched me to the heart; I am so proud and glad to see the gallant way in which our brave and dauntless Confederate soldiers are offering their services to the Country. In all the history of the world there has never been any more brave and noble soldiers than those who gave the brightest and best of their lives to our cause from ’61 to ’65; and now after all these years that same noble spirit prompts them to again enter the field of battle. I have not had any commission as yet, if I should have one I would love to have me with you, but of course I do not know how the appointments will be made.” In very good condition, with tape-repaired partial separations to mailing folds, a few chips to edges, and overall toning and soiling.
