Confederate major general (1836-1906), known as 'Fightin' Joe,' who led his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 8.5, December 14, 1904. Addressed from Mexico, a handwritten letter to his daughter, in full: "Just received Annie's letter of Dec. 7. Bless her soul, but she don't tell me about her visit to Ashville. I fear it was not as pleasant as she expected. She must tell me all about her visit. I am invited to the great inauguration ball to-morrow night & expect to see much beauty & elegance." In fine condition, with scattered staining to the last page.
