Boston physician, orator and patriot (1741–1775) who was a pivotal figure in the early revolutionary agitation in Massachusetts. Warren drafted the Suffolk Resolves, was active at town meetings during the British occupation, and served on the Committee of Safety after the 1770 Boston Massacre. A member of the first three Provincial Congresses, he was president pro tempore in 1775, and then president. Warren dispatched Paul Revere and William Dawes on horseback to warn the patriots that British General Gage was sending troops to seize stockpiled patriot arms at Concord. Exceedingly rare partly-printed DS, signed “Jos. Warren,” one page, 10 x 7, May 19, 1775. Document signed as president pro tempore of "The Congress of the Colony of the Massachusetts-Bay.” Appointment of Thomas Seever to be "Second Lieutenant Foot Company in the Regiment of Foot Whereof His Eccel Artemas Ward Esqr is Command'r raised by the Congress aforesaid, for the Defence of said Colony. You are, therefore, carefully and diligently to discharge the Duty of a Second Lieutenant in leading, ordering, and exercising the said Company in Arms; both interior Officers and Soldiers, and to keep them in good Order and Discipline; and they are hereby commanded to obey you…and you are yourself to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions as you shall, from Time to Time, receive from the General and Commander in Chief of the Forces raised in the Colony aforesaid, for the Defense of the fame, or any other your Superior Officers, according to military Rules and Discipline of War, in Pursuance to the Trust reposed in you.” Signed at the conclusion by Warren, and countersigned by Samuel Freeman as Secretary Pro Tempore. Beautifully archivally cloth matted and framed with a color image of John Trumbull’s portrait entitled The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17,1775, to an overall size of 18 x 24. Affixed to an identical size thin rigid board, repaired vertical separation to right side, intersecting folds, uniform toning from previous display, a bit heavier at edges, otherwise very good condition.
Written exactly one month to the day after he sent Paul Revere on horseback to warn the patriots that the British were coming...just a month after the Battles of Lexington and Concord launched the American Revolution...Warren bestowed this military commission upon Seever, a Minute Man who was third in command of his outfit and marched in the Lexington Alarm. Warren’s order to Seever was simple—to rally Minute Man volunteers and prepare them to fight—”leading, ordering, and exercising the said Company...Officers and Soldiers...commanded to obey you.” Warren, an influential patriot, would encounter Seever later at Bunker Hill—ironically, the place where Warren would meet his demise. After heavy fighting, the American fortifications were overrun by the British and Warren was killed by a British musketball while attempting to rally the militia. Superlative item from the start of America’s fight for freedom.
