Four-star general (1883–1946), aka “Vinegar Joe” and “Old Joe,” best known for his service in China. Relieved from command in 1944 as part of FDR’s geopolitical maneuvering in Asia, Stillwell was reassigned to command the American ground forces during the final battle for Okinawa in 1945. FDC with a cachet honoring the US Army’s crossing of the Rhine and its victory, signed under the cachet in black ink, “Joseph W. Stillwell, Gen. USA.” Accompanied by a 1945 TLS from aide-de-camp Major Carl Arnold, stating “Enclosed is a set of General Stillwell’s stars which you requested.” Two of his stars are attached to the top left corner of the letter. Suede matted and framed with the aforementioned letter, a CBI patch, and a portrait of Stillwell, to an overall size of 23.25 x 18.5. In fine condition, with some scattered light creases.
