Silversmith Joseph Richardson Autograph Document Signed. Sighed: "Joseph Richardson", one page, 8" x 5.5", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 1791. This is an account for silver spoons, a ladle, and an engraving for James Knowles. In 1777, Joseph Richardson Junior and his brother Nathaniel inherited the business founded by their grandfather, Francis, which was by then the oldest silversmithing establishment in continuous operation in Philadelphia. Nathaniel left the business in 1790, leaving it solely in his brother's hands. The Richardsons were one of the great American silversmithing firms, made even more important by the fact that their work is exceptionally well documented. In her book-length study of their careers, Martha Gandy Fales writes: "A study of their lives and work illuminates not only the history of early American silver, but also the early history of the nation". In fine condition; usual folds are present; moderate edge wear and chipping; slight overall toning.
