Very rare autograph letter signed “Joseph Pulitzer” on his letterhead as Editor of “The Post-Dispatch,” St. Louis, 19 April 1882. To William Henry Smith, General Agent of the Western Associated Press, of which Pulitzer's newspaper was a member. At this time, the Western AP was threatening to end its alliance with the New York AP which would affect Pulitzer obtaining foreign news for his paper. In full, “I never got your book on St Clair [Smith wrote ''St. Clair Papers''] and wish you would send it. Will you be in Chicago next week? And next? I intend to run up and don’t want to miss you again. Please let me know, as I am anxious to to [sic] see about some matter. Hoping that you & yours are all well. I remain yours very sincerely Joseph Pulitzer.” Single-page measures 6” x 9.25”. Small nick at left margin in lower blank area and light browning, otherwise near fine. Lot also includes a 3pp. secretarial ALS by Pulitzer, written in 1901 when Pulitzer's blindness caused him to dictate letters to his secretary, who even signed his name for him. This letter, datelined Bar Harbor, Maine, 8 October 1901, reads in part, ''Dear Colonel Hester / I believe that the Brooklyn Eagle is…the best Evening paper in the United States, and I ought to be somewhat of a judge as I have two evening papers myself…I believe that if the sense of public virtue and public morality is supposed to be higher in Brooklyn than in Manhattan, it is in some degree due to the daily teachings of the Eagle. And the highest ideal of a New Yorker in my mind is to be a moral teacher…” Hester was President of the “Brooklyn Daily Eagle,” to which Pulitzer refers in the letter. Letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Spotting at top of first page, and all three pages glued together at the upper left corner; second and third sheets at both upper corners. A superb Pulitzer archive.
